I turned 27 last year (the age my mother was when she had me) so I’ve been thinking a lot about the ways she sacrificed before I was even born…

My mother was about a year out of medical school, still very much at the genesis of her career and then I came along, completely changing the trajectory of her life at the time. .

As a 27 year old still finding my way in so many ways, wrestling with discernment and (often times exhausting) decision making every day, it’s hard for me to imagine having another life to consider and make choices for, let alone choosing to do so. I can’t imagine it was in any way easy but I’m so grateful for her choice to bravely and selflessly put me before herself and her 5-10 year plan in the midst of uncertainty. .

This year I’ve also started to think a lot more about my mom’s personhood. .

Of course all moms are people, but let’s be honest, as their children, we don’t really think about that as often as we should. I have so much more of an appreciation and gratitude for the woman I’ve known all my life and for the woman she was before I breathed my very first breath.

Mothers are truly such a gift and I’m learning new ways to “unpack” that every day
